Yogi Bear (2010)

I don't understand people, its YOGI BEAR not Kill Bill
All these people that are rating this movie as boring, expected, "I knew exactly where the plot is going" SERIOUSLY???? its YOGI BEAR, not a Tarintino movie. I personally LOVED this movie. Sure the jokes were corny, but that's why they were funny. The jokes were always corny on the original Yogi cartoon. I honestly thought I was going to hate this movie because of all the so called bad reviews it got. However, I decided to go see it anyway, at the discount 3d theater, and I laughed from beginning to end. My 9 year old son also was cracking up. It was a nice, clean, goofy family movie. What's so wrong about that? after we watched it at the movies, we went out and bought the blu ray combo and watched it again. I enjoyed it more the second time watching it in the comfort of my home. Don't listen to People's opinions, rent it if you must, but watch it and make up your OWN mind. If you are like any of the people at that theater that day, you will love it.

as for...

A Pic-a-Nic Basket Full of Fun
Well, I went to an advanced screening of the new Yogi Bear movie and I loved it. It is a very funny film with lots of laugh-out-loud moments. I took my 11 year old son with me and he enjoyed it just as much as I did. As we were leaving the cinema, we were both going back and forth over all the lines from the movie. I think the animators did a great job with Yogi and Boo Boo. Dan Ackroyd did a good job with Yogi and Justin Timberlake was fantastic as Boo Boo. Speaking of the little buddy, in the commercials Boo Boo seems a little smarmy but in the film he is the same ol' Boo Boo that we all know and love. The story line is pretty weak but the antics of Yogi and Boo Boo help make up for it.

As a matter of fact, the weakest part is the human actors. Yogi and Boo Boo were always dead on perfect and funny during their scenes. However, Tom Cavanagh is weak as Ranger Smith. Instead of chasing after Yogi and getting all upset at Yogi's antics, Tom took the opposite approach: Yogi...

Pretty Good For A Kid's Movie
I loved Yogi cartoons when I was a kid, many moons ago. Wasn't sure what they would do to wreck that with an "updated" movie. Fortunately, they pretty much stuck to the original formula and produced and thoroughly predictable but thoroughly enjoyable movie.
We took our grandson and I expected to drift off or spend more time concentrating on the popcorn bucket than the actual movie. However, despite a massive headache at the start of the show, halfway through, I was back to the screen and had a great time. The live actors were a vague mystery to me. I have seen them all somewhere, someplace, but couldn't put my finger on who they were. When I got home and looked them up on IMDB, I had that "aha" moment. Anna Faris was the most recognizable.

I'll have to give Kudos to Dan Aykroyd as he really nailed Yogi's voice. I'll also give A for effort to Justin Timberlake, who did an admirable if slightly off Boo Boo.

I was able to predict virtually every single scene...

love it.
My five year old watches this show almost daily. She loves it. It shows how you can accomplish working together and yet be successful in stressful situations but yet have fun.

So Scripted....
I love Cake Boss and other shows of this type, but this one.... OMG it is SO scripted, I don't think there is more than 2 candid moments in each episode. I finally quit watching at episode 5... I can't bear another minute of the fake, scripted dialogue.

i love watching all the new ideas they come up with for cupcakes and mommy is hilarious! it is great to see sisters work so well together.

Cumberland: Island in Time

Interesting information - good production values
My son and I have camped on Cumberland a number of times and always stuggle to describe this special place to friends. The DVD was purchased to fill in our knowledge of Cumberland, to allow us to re-visit through the images, and to show others what an unusual and interesting place it is.

It was very professionally photographed and was well paced to hold the viewer's interest.

I was pleased with my purchase.

Even better than the first!
I've recently decided that Shameless is the best show on television currently. It's the kind of series that's so fast-moving, so well acted and written, that you can watch it over and over again and notice new quirks each time. Some people would probably call the show's lack of shame tasteless. To me, it's exciting. You truly don't know what's going to happen next!

The second season started out a little slow, but once Frank's mother ("Grammy") shows up, things really kick into gear. Played with utter relish by the great Louise Fletcher, Grammy's a force of nature. And let's just say, her character arc ends in quite a... shocking way.

Season Two also sees the return of Chloe Webb as Monica Gallagher, Frank's estranged wife and altogether crazy, sad character. Her episodes are such a great, gritty depiction of mental illness. I'm always amazed with how this show manages to be both fall out of your seat funny and completely heartbreaking... sometimes at the same...

Totally GREAT
I can't wait until season two comes out on DVD. Shameless is totally different and fantastically written, directed and the actors superbly cast. If it continues with this great ensemble, it will last season after season for years.

Great show! Fun to watch!
I love love love this show! The characters are so well written play out great. Nothing clean about this humor though folks, so if you are looking for a show to watch with the family, try something else.

OMG!
Best show ever if you like travel shows, or ghost hunter shows, or monster hunting shows with the perfect host... thumbs up on this one. I have seen all five seasons and even bought the book written by the host Josh Gates,as it goes into more detail than the tv show.... you must see this show... He was actually invited to join the world reknowned "Explorers Club" for the work he has done doing this show! Cool huh!

Destination Truth
Is there a Season 6? I love their humor. All 5 Seasons are great. Can't wait to watch more. Wish they could do a show in Hawaii.

destination truth has lost it's edge
I liked the first four seasons a lot better. A lot of the supporting cast has changed. I still think it's ok just not as good as earlier seasons.

Zach's Emergency

Awesome Family
Little People Big World

This is an educational TV series which follows the Roloff family through their eveyday lives. Both parents Matt and Amy are little people they have four children. A pair of twins,Jeremy is average size the other twin Zach is also little like his parents. Then comes Molly and the youngest is Jacob both are also average size. Sometimes you kind of forget that they are little and you just start seeing them as what they are normal human beings. This family through the magic of camaras let us into their home to show the world that little people are just like everyone else, the only difference is found in their physical struggles. I have learned a lot about little people through this amazing series. The Roloffs also take their viewers to their conventions which opens our eyes to the need for more advocacy for this special community. I highly recommend season 2 because it contains inspiring stories, a great vacation at Hawaii, and moving moments that...

Bollywood Dance with Jaya Vaswani

Fantastic Intro to Bollywood Dancing!
I love this video! I don't consider myself a natural dancer at all, but Jaya does a WONDERFUL job at breaking down the choreography into manageable, easy-to-follow segments. And don't be fooled! At first, the steps don't seem too challenging, but once you put them all together (and get moving at the music's tempo), this becomes a full-on workout. I was sweating majorly...but with a huge smile throughout and full of so much joy. For the price and quick access, I highly recommend this!

great fo beginers

Good Series
If you like the Ancient Aliens series, or Is It Real, then you'll like this. It basically like Ghost Hunters, but with UFO's.

Hmmm
I see why they canceled this show. Not enough people watched it. Truly a debunker type of show. although you think they are researching UFO's when they are just trying to prove to the public they don't exist. We all know they do.

Hard to chase old UFO reports
Wasn't quite sure what to expect from this. I found the Destination Truth series fun to watch not because they answered any real questions but the exotic locations they visited was interesting. This is kind of a spin off of that show but it's difficult to make an exciting show traveling to places that had possible reports of what some think was the site of a UFO. I like the Fact or Faked, Ancient Alien, or documentary type series but this one just seemed like National Geographic has run out of new show ideals. Maybe watch a show or two but I wouldn't recommend buying the full season before you try it.

It is beyond me what goes into the thinking to cancel a great show like this. American TV finally puts out a quality program and it's cancelled after the second season. I was delighted to finally be able to see it again.

Excellent show. Very real and believeable.
It's too bad this series was cancelled. It seems that whenever a series is actually good it doesn't last long.
The stories are poignant and also funny.

A great show
Seems the really good shows are always being cancelled, and this ranks right up there with better television. The characters are flawed without ever seeming hopeless, and from the first show there's an ease among the characters that lets you know this will be good. Great story lines, very funny - I wish another station had picked up this show when TNT cancelled. Highly recommend it even though you go in knowing there are only two seasons available.

Permanently afraid of the dark.
I won't lie: I purchased this out of pure nostalgia. I vividly remember being terrified for days after watching some of these episodes when they originally aired. Surprisingly, some of these episodes hold up pretty well, whereas others look like they were recently excavated from the world's worst 90s time capsule. If I Could, I Surely Would

Second Season Even Better Than The First
I shan't bombared you readers with technical details about the actors, performance, directing, etc... of this show. Just wanted to stop by and give my opinion on Men Of A Certain Age Season Two...

I truly haven't been this impressed with a television show since the pilot episode of Eureka some years ago (and very seldom before that). Finally, there is a series on my TV that not only is fun, but displays some actual maturity as well. And quite frankly, Men Of A Certain Age is far more real than any reality tv program running today. If you have not yet seen Men Of A Certain Age, by all means put it on your netflix list, check it out on Hulu or TNT.com, or better yet, just buy the first season on DVD because I doubt very much you will be disappointed with such a purchase.

If I must admit to a greivence with Men Of A Certain Age, there are two that come to mind. Each episode is so well written and paced that you find yourself lost within it's run-time and...

Im so sad it's cancelled
I agree with everything A.G. said. Thank you for the insightful review.
It never ceases to amaze me how TV producers can continue to find more shocking trashy reality shows to put on the air. Then when anything with class comes on the air it doesn't make it for more than 2 seasons. I am so disappointed that this country can't find interest in a show with heart, warmth and nonshocking reality.

;0)
Another good season for me personally, Ray Romano, Andre Braugher & Scott Bakula did a good job the second season. And basically picks up where it left off, Scott's character is getting older still trying to find himself, sleeps with anything that walks hehehe, Andre's character still the family man and run the dealership & Ray's character still trying to get out their and date and I guess find himself since his divorce. What I love about this show is the hint of humor it has and the journey it takes you on with these 3 friends.

Maniac Cop

A cop killing innocent people? You mean a maniac cop?
First of all, let me clarify that the four star rating only qualifies in the genre of slightly-schlocky gore. For those of you that don't appreciate this type of movie, it's more like one star. But if you're looking to buy the DVD and reading this review, I have a feeling you're into this.

That being said, this is top quality when it comes to off-kilter horror action. A monstrous killer dressed like a cop is on the loose in New York, killing innocent people instead of criminals. One cop lets the paper know that they think it's a cop gone bad, which turns the public against the police force.

As the terror level escalates Bruce Campbell is framed for the murder of his wife, and becomes the lead suspect in the brutal killings. Now, only Bruce and two other cops know the chilling secret of the maniac cop, and will stop at nothing to try to stop him.

Although there are numerous amounts of "what the...?" sections in this film, it's still mindlessly enjoyable...

Phantom of the Cop-era
This Larry Cohen flick (produced and scripted by Cohen but directed by William Lustig) is a clever hybrid of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA story, 1970s and 1980s cop films, and the slasher sub-genre of horror cinema. But instead of an opera house, the venue has expanded to include the entire city of New York, and the wronged antagonist is not a forgotten composer but is, instead, a once-good police officer (hulking actor Robert Z'Dar) who was used as a scapegoat by higher-ups and was subsequently murdered in prison at the hands of thugs. Slasher-film elements come into play when the resurrected cop leaves a trail of corpses in his wake as he heads to city hall to even the score with his former bosses.

As is usually the case, Cohen's script is replete with dark tongue-in-cheek humor and palatable helpings of terror and blood. The gags (both the laughing and choking kind) are bolstered by the presence of horror-genre fave Bruce Campbell, he of EVIL DEAD (1981) fame; Tom Atkins,...

Kill Street Blues...
MANIAC COP is a wonderful revenge film. Robert Z'Dar is the title character, a shadowy, towering killer who was once an NYPD hero. Is he alive? Dead? Something in between? Tom Atkins (The Fog, Night Of The Creeps) is the officer attempting to find and stop the maniacal man in blue. Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 1 and 2, Bubba Ho Tep) is a likely suspect. Legendary Richard Roundtree (Shaft) is the police commisioner and William Smith (Invasion Of The Beegirls, Memorial Valley Massacre) is a captain! Larry Cohen's writing shines through this gloomy tale, w/ familar faces from his past work. Not very scary, but fun to watch...

The Vault of Secrets, Part 2 [HD]

American fans have been cheated!
Every story in this season is terrific, but the U.S. set does not have any special features. In the U.K., this series was released with a fantastic special feature--the complete "Doctor Who" adventure from 1975, "The Pyramids of Mars," with the 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane. They should have included it in the U.S. edition as well.

The best Sarah Jane yet
I've enjoyed this show since the beginning, and considering it's a kids show, I've always found it to have some surprising maturity and depth. And the things that really annoyed me about some of the early Dr. Who episodes (e.g. fart jokes and childish "gross-out" moments) were always present but less annoying in the Sarah Jane Adventures, because of the context and target audience. Well, I'm happy to say that season 4 not only does away with childish gross-out-ness (for the most part), the stories have a more serious and mature tone than seasons past, with more emphasis on character (although they have always been very good in this respect). Also some noticeably improved acting from Tommy Knight, and very solid performances from the other two. Even a moment from Rani that moved me to tears. Clyde, as always, is my favorite, and he has a great season here. And Elisabeth Sladen, of course, is simply stunning as the Sarah Jane we've known and loved for so many years. She will be very...

A happy and bittersweet DVD set
THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES started its fourth season with a surprise, the departure of costar Tommy Knight ("Luke") and K-9. He reappeared via web conversations with the main cast and occassional walk-ons.
The high point is the long-delayed onscreen meeting of Sarah Jane and her immediate predescessor, Jo Grant. It's a great story. Even better, it includes a postscript where Sarah Jane gives a rundown of the post-Doctor activities of all the Companions known to modern Earth.
The bittersweet part is at the time none of the viewership knew how ill Elisabeth Sladen was. She and the producers knew. The final episode plays with the idea of replacing Sarah Jane by a new character but .... no, I'll stop there.
The series ends with a fitting curtain call, both for the series, the character, and the actress.

Terror Toons 2

Not As Good As The First One
Before I start my review, I noticed a continuity error. In this movie, the DVD is mailed at the beginning. The DVD features Hansel and Gretel...but they weren't "created" until after the DVD was sent! Oh, well. Like I said in title, definitely not as good as the first one. And the three hot guys that are mentioned....try 2 hot guys, lol. And seeing people eat is gross. The dark-haired guy from the first one is back as human Hansel, nipple piercings and all. The costumes look even cheaper than they did in the first movie. Even the cartoon effects in the first one were better (they were more cartoon-like), and DON'T get me started on that 'Terror Toons 1.5' mini at the beginning of the movie! There are a number of bonus features, but the main movie itself is people trapped in a house trying to kill the bad guys, like the 1st one. I would recommend buying this is you bought the 1st one and want both, but it's not worth buying on it's own. Sorry, Joe Castro.

My Favorite Hitler Youth (Director's Cut)

Very interesting documentary
This is a brief candid interview with a man that had a very interesting history, going from a bullied Hitler youth in Germany to an engineer in the US who designed one of the first portable hard drives. He talks frankly about his failure to fit into the athletic ideal Hitler youth paradigm and about his unfulfilled relationship with his father. It seems that this man's past could make for a captivating memoir, and I'm not sure that the breadth of his unique experiences was entirely captured in this short film. Nonetheless, it is quite thought-provoking.

An amateur film with a great story.
This film was definitely made buy an amateur. It's basically just a guy holding a camera while interviewing another guy with some video of Hitler Youth added throughout. It's also very short. Still, it was interesting to hear Fred Curtis' journey from Hitler Youth to American soldier. If you're really into WWII movies, it's worth a watch.

NOTE: It's only $1 more to buy than to watch. Take that into consideration if you like to keep a collection of WWII/documentary movies.

Hitler Youth to American Soldier
In 1930s Germany, Friedrich Karl Nischwitz was a student at a military school for the Hitler Youth. After 4 years of beatings and humiliation by his classmates and elders, Fred finally escaped to the USA. Friedrich Karl Nischwitz became Fred Curtis, a US citizen, who fought against the Nazis during World War II. After the war, Fred embarked on his greatest achievement, to become one of the founding fathers of the modern day computer hard drive. This is Fred's story. Documentary film.

The Scottish Key: An Investigation Into the Origin of Freemasonry

One of the best on Freemasonry
This was solid in its research and very well filmed. It's nice to get a video on Freemasonry that doesn't include interviews with nutcase conspiracy theorists. This rates as one of the very best productions that I have seen.

Put Together Very Well
I was surprised that the content was very well thought out and this not a Hodge podge of pictures and anit masonry rhetoric. For the initiated will get more from this video.

Fairly well done
Good overview that covers a lot of the basic theories. Only part not covered is why Scotland retained the "original" lodges, linked to their immediate dismissal of the Templar connection early on. Evidence may be thin but it is there that some Templar influence was present in Scotland after the suppression of the Order. In any case, even if Freemasonry lacks a direct link to the Templar knights, there is a lot of evidence that Freemasonry's founders were very familiar with the Templar's rules.

Kiss Me Thrice

Original and funny!!!
The writing and acting are terrific in this incredibly original 6 episode series. I never thought I could be captivated by a show with bullets flying everywhere, but the dialogue in each scene, is so funny and great, I couldn't get enough. Set in a place named Bruteville, the production design gives the exact right noirish look to a city with warring crime bosses. I adore Eddie Izzard and this is a perfect turn for Eric Roberts. Neil Napier and Kate Kelton are great in their roles, but, Max Williams is truly outstanding as the lead who, ...you guessed it, took the 'bullet in the face.' I loved this show!

A Cheesy And Uproarious Send-Up Of Detective Noir Filled With Action Mayhem And Unrelenting Comic Violence
"Is he good? Is he bad? A psychopath or a sexy cad?" This is how the loopy theme song for "Bullet in the Face" begins and, trust me, this silly little song perfectly encapsulates the offbeat humor of this rollicking six part series from Canada. I became intrigued by this show without knowing too much about it other than it starred Eddie Izzard and Eric Roberts as rival crime bosses in a dystopian cityscape known simply as Bruteville. Originally broadcast on IFC, "Bullet in the Face" has a dark comic allure that is completely over-the-top (and feels very much like a crazy graphic novel come to life) and may not be for everyone. However, if you are tired of the mundane formula shows that populate the TV landscape, this offer something decidedly different. Beginning Hand Drumming (A Guide To Recreation And Wellness)

The best beginning hand drumming DVD/Book in the market
This DVD/Book combo is the best product I have seen in the market to learn about hand drumming. It is fun, interactive and really easy to follow, and you don't need to have any previous knowledge about music.

I totally recommend it to everybody who wants to learn hand drumming in a fun and interactive way.

Besides you can use this product with your family and friends, a really cool way to spend time together, and do something different that everybody can enjoy, no matter what age they are.

Give it a try, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!

Surprisingly liberating
I've never been a drummer nor particularly musical but once I took a class from Jill I knew I'd found something surprisingly liberating and exciting. This book/DVD combo is a fantastic opportunity to have fun in a new kind of way. At this price it also makes a memorable and affordable gift for someone. Jill has brought together musicianship, psychological health, and community building in a completely accessible way. Quite a package that should be in every family's library.

Good all around introduction to hand drumming
I bought this DVD for my family who want to begin hand drumming. I rented it first from Netflix and found it was easy to follow and covered the basics of hand drumming pretty thoroughly and was fun to play along with. We bought it and have used it to begin our own little drum circle. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that is didn't give me quite enough info on picking a good drum for a beginner. She does cover the different types (i.e. wood or synthetic, real skin or synthetic heads, etc) and talks a little about the differences but being true beginners it would have been nice to have a little bit more recommendation on which is the easiest for beginners to start with. The DVD is easy to navigate through and find specific lessons you want to play. The instructor is pleasant and easy to follow. My 3 year old likes to play along with the exercises as well.

Jism

Great flic!
The chemistry between Bipasha Basu (actress) and John Abraham (actor)is ridiculous. Some of the songs are romantic, catchy and quite steamy. The plot thickens about 20 minutes into the movie. Overall, its a good watch but not a classic or anything.

One In The Chamber

HONOR AMONGST KILLERS
These 2 men together baffled me for a minute but after seeing it it was great and off the wall. There is honor amongst thieves, and even killers. This was done with class. Many may sleep on it but it was worth every minute beginning to end

FISTFUL OF EUROS
Ray Carver (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is an assassin for hire in Prague. He is hired by crime boss Mikhail Suverov (Andrew Bicknell) to kill the Tavanian family over a territory issue...it's all about respect. One of the Tavanians survive to the dismay of the Surverov family. This ignites a war. Surverov then hires Aleksey Andreev (Dolph Lundgren) to finish the job. Meanwhile in an ironic twist the Tavanian's hire Carver to kill his former boss the Surverov family.

The two assassins have different approaches. Ray Carver likes to keep a low profile while Aleksey wears Hawaiian shirts and usually comes in the front door. Carver works out, reads the Bible, kills people for hire, and stalks a girl. Dolph Lundgren gives the film some attempted comedy. During the opening credits, they opt to change the fonts and make the "N"s backwards. I thought it might somehow relate to the film, but it wasn't that deep.

Both these stars have done better films and Cuba has certainly done...

Underrated
One in the Chamber is an underrated action-thriller by director William Kaufman. Kaufman is one of a handful of DTV directors to really watch. (The others being Isaac Florentine, Roel Reine, and John Hyams.). Kaufman's action scenes
are always handled carefully, not sloppily, and with a definite, obvious respect for the days when audiences were presented with hand to hand fight scenes that were like mini martial arts demonstrations rather than quickly cut illusions of combat. Kaufman really seems to have respect for the genre. It seems that these days, with very few exceptions, the place to find a good action movie is in the DTV market and Kaufman is definitely one of the directors to watch. Of course, having Dolph Lundgren give one of his more memorable performances in recent years helps a bit too. Let's hope this film is successful enough to call for a sequel.

Jacques Pepin Fast Food My Way: Sunny Delights

My favorite chef
I love all of Jacques Pepin's shows. It's fun to watch and if you follow the recipe and the instruction, you will get tasty dishes.

The Master of Technique is at it Again
Jacques Pépin is one of the leading culinary educators of our time. His books, videos, and live demonstrations teach the all important Techniques, and he does it in this series of videos that are his PBS show, with a full meal each time.

I can't imagine I'm going to like a tomato tartare, but I Will try it some time. I hardly ever come across a dish of his that I don't like, no matter what my initial impression. (His Cassoulet is a notable exception - however, the dish was good, it's just not a real cassoulet.)

An easy, quick pea purée will make a good side in many menus.

Mussels. Hmmm. Must admit I was very dubious about this one. I'm pretty rigid about my mussels...steamed in a shallot, garlic, white wine bath, served in the shell, baguette to,dip in the sauce from the steaming...and frites. Well, I tried Ina Garten's mussels with garlic/saffron mayonnaise,...

Doubletime

Terrific Documentary on a little know competitive sport - with a killer soundtrack!
In the tradition of such documentaries as "Hoop Dreams" (basketball), "Drumline" (marching band competition), and even "Mariachi High" (a wonderful PBS DVD on Mariachi Band competitions which I reviewed last month), comes this 89-minute documentary about - of all things - competitive rope skipping/jumping. In the 1970s two different organizations were formed for two slightly different "sports". There was "rope skipping" in which a single person skipped over a rope as many times as they could in an allotted time. This attracted mostly white high school students. Another organization set up international competitions for "double dutch", where two members of the team turn TWO ropes - in opposite directions - which other members (sometimes as many as three) perform "tricks" (somersaults, head spins) between the turning ropes. The competitors in the latter were primarily black high schools. The competitions because international when the Japanese kids incorporated kung-fu moves into the...

best jump rope documentary i've seen
This jump rope documentary is a gem! My daughter is on a competitive jump rope team, and we cannot get enough jump rope in our house! Having scoured the internet for jump rope videos of any type - whether it's a documentary, fiction, or educational (i.e. tricks), this one is my favorite. It is a real life documentary of two very different competitive teams making their way to square off at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The jumpers that are featured are varied and interesting, and the maker does a great job of highlighting the fundamental differences between the two teams (i.e. socio-economic differences) without it becoming overkill. The jump rope content is excellent, and although it features primarily double dutch, I think it has no trouble appealing to those who compete in individual events. For anybody who is "into" jumping rope, or for anybody interested in the historical or cultural aspects of this sport, I would recommend this whole-heartedly!

Enligthening Docu About the World of Competitive Jumping!!
Before watching this documentary, I knew there was competitive double dutch jumping competition but I never knew of the the split between double dutch and jump rope groups! It was very enlightening and very enjoyable to see these kids truly enjoy this little known competitive sport. My heart went out to every child and coach in the documentary watching their passion and efforts! This documentary is really a must see for everyone and especially for teachers to inspire determination in their students to be leaders and individuals!

Bonsai

A Chilean Character Study About Idealized Romance And The Writing Process
The Chilean film "Bonsai" is an experience that completely confounded my expectations. I try not to be unduly influenced with how a film is being marketed, instead I like to let it unfold naturally. But, in this instance, I do need to reference how Cristian Jimenez's work is being portrayed in its North American DVD release. The cover art (and its tag line) intimate that this is going to be a quirky comedy, perhaps of a romantic bent. The whimsical graphic, however, has little to do with the actual movie. Although there are elements of comedy, "Bonsai" is a rather serious contemplation of idealized romance and the writing process. There's certainly nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's a lovely film in many ways. The DVD looks so frivolous and lightweight, however, that I just wanted to mention what I thought was a slight disconnect in marketing.

"Bonsai" is a story that takes place over alternating timelines. The contemporary thread introduces our hero (a deadpan...

Small trees, Poetry, Novel Writing in Chile and Proust - What's not to like?
This is a film by Christian Jiminez based on the book by Alejandro Zambra and it comes from Chile. It was premiered at Cannes and despite a theatre release in both the UK and USA in March went pretty quickly to DVD. It is about Julio who is into literature and we meet him as a student where his reticence to learn Proust is not seen as an aphrodisiac by the woman he wants Emilia. So his literary juices have to start flowing before any others can.

The story then moves on eight years and we meet an older, though equally lazy, Julio who is now with his soul mate. He is approached by a well known author who asks him to transcribe his latest novel as he has written it by hand. Well Julio asks a price but it is too high and so he don't get the gig. He has pretended that he still doing the job and so decides to write to novel himself sharing it with his friend, who becomes his aid and critic without knowing it is his work.

The film keeps going back in chapters eight...

Beautiful, mesmerizing and funny, but too slow for most movie fans
Bonsái is a very, VERY low-key comedy plus dreamy meditation on the nature of memory and of literature - and of bonsai - admittedly NOT most movie-goers' cup of tea. The only action is fairly frequent sex, but even that is more drolly amusing and detached than erotic.

The central place Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past occupies in this movie is no accident (the current fad is to translate Proust's French title as In Search of Lost Time, which is literal but moronic). The theme, the tone, the focus, the slow flow with strong but intangible undercurrents of this extraordinary movie are as true a filming of Proust's unfilmable 5000-page masterpiece as we're likely ever to see.

Bonsái could not have been made without Diego Noguera in the lead as Julio. His exquisite grace, charm, humor and intelligence permeate the whole movie, and viewers to whom he does not appeal will be left cold and annoyed.

If you love the movie, as I do, it's...

Shuffle

Moving themes and a plot that makes you think
To provide full disclosure about this review, I am huge fan of Kurt Kuenne's films. If you haven't yet seen Dear Zachary - you need to. In any case, Shuffle was a well-paced movie that kept me thinking and trying to solve the mystery of lost time. I don't want to give away spoilers but the back and forth through different aspects of the main character's life provided a wonderful mosaic into the life choices he made and how funny fate is in terms of changing the game on people. Kurt's signature film style comes through with light and dark moods supported by outstanding orchestral overtones that are always well timed for big emotional crescendos.

This is one of those movies that will spark more questions at the end in terms of understanding the journey you have been on the whole time as a participant in the protagonists puzzle. The film is really trying to make a point around how we step through life and what each of the moments mean ultimately. There are several emotional...

Fantastic Film!
I love this film! I have seen it twice on the big screen. First at The Phoenix Film Festival where it won Best Picture and Best Director! Very well deserved prizes I might add. Then at Phoenix Comicon where it was the opening night film of the Comicon Film Festival!

The film makes me think of a cross between an episode of The Twilight Zone and the film: Memento! The theatrical version was in Black and White. It was truly meant to be seen in Black and White. The DVD has both a black and white and color version. I recommend watching the black and white first!

The Writer, Director, Composer Kurt Kuenne is extremely talented at what he does. He pays a great attention to detail. Additionally, T.J. Thyne is perfect as the lead actor in Shuffle.

Amazing Film!
Feels like Frank Capra meets Twilight Zone. Favorite film from the festival circuit this year. Must see! Epic score, beautifully shot, tight script.

Bernie [Blu-ray]

Unexpected but quite good
Let me state upfront that I knew literally next to nothing about the movie's plot when I went to see it recently at my indie-movie theatre here in Cincinnati. I had heard good things about it, and that was good enough for me to check it out. Well, I was in for quite a surprise.

"Bernie" (95 min.) brings the story of Bernie Tiede (played by Jack Black) as a funeral director (excuse me, "assistant" funeral director) in Carthage, TX. Bernie is the most likeable guy you'll ever meet. He is involved in the community like no-one else before, and the small town just things the world of him. At one of the funerals, Bernie meets widow Marjorie Nugent (played by Shirley McLaine), and they strike a friendship. Marjorie is viewed by everyone as a b*tch, but the two of them get along just great. Things take a turn for the worse as Marjorie becomes more and more possesive of Bernie, and it all builds up to a confrontation between the two, and Bernie shoots her. I won't tell more of the...

Possibly the greatest film on small-town America in this decade
Bernie is the new masterpiece by Richard Linklater. The fact that he could turn such a difficult premise to such a successful black comedy/drama is remarkable. This may be one of the greatest works on small-town America in this decade. Though Bernie may not have the breadth of a work like Fargo, it does magic in how it tells its story.

Really, the most fascinating thing about Bernie is the way the story is told. Rather than give us a linear story, Bernie story is mostly retold by the residents of Carthage, TX who were witnessed to the gruesome events that occurred in this innocent town. This style can backfire gloriously if these characters are too animated, but Linklater strikes the right tone. With a Texan accent and some Southern innocence, these characters all suit the benefits the main story line. He seamlessly alternates between the world of the main characters and residents. This is very competent screenwriting as Linklater only uses his main characters when they are...

I know the real Bernie!!
This is a great movie! We (people who know Bernie and or lived in Carthage) thought that there was no way that a movie could be made about a murder and be funny....But with the cast and the bizarre "this can't be true" storyline, it blew me away. I am going to see it in Carthage on Sunday with my mom and her sister, my aunt, who is in the movie. If you are a Jack Black fan...then this is a "must see".

When Hunters Become The Hunted

Where the rat at?
"Rat B*stards" is an American reality show. Or is it surreality? There's no way this is based on a true story, not even freely. I hope...

Rigger (a.k.a. the Mad Scientist of the Bayou), Squirrel, Shane and a few others are gun-touting, bearded, crazy cowboys with heavy Southern accents. Or "Louisiana patriots", as the network's series presentation would have it. Their mission: to exterminate the swamp rats of the Louisiana wetlands by any means necessary. Their motto: "If you can't beat 'em, burn 'em!"

Yes, swamp rats. Apparently, the cuddly, furry and sweet little nutria is a pest species in the United States. Besides, the rats tried to kill Squirrel's dog 40 years ago, so he takes it kind of personally. The extermination team roams the swamps with semi-automatic rifles, Molotov cocktails and even modern GPS equipment. It seems no extermination method is unorthodox enough. At one point, Rigger tries to torch an entire island to get rid of the rat infestation...

Jacques Pepin Fast Food My Way: Go Fish

Asparagus Validated
I've always thought the fat asparagus was more tender & tasted better than the "pencil thin" ones. Well, Jacques Pépin has not only validated that, and explained why, but also shown how to be able to use More of the stalks! And the asparagus custards looked so good that, since I was fortunate enough to have some asparagus in my fridge, I made it right away. 'Twas very good.

Tuna steaks, several different ways: slow cooked on the plates in a 200

Great classics and fine technique
Great video of Jacques. I've improved my cooking techniques thanks to his guidance. Occasionally he mentions his experiences with Julia and work at Howard Johnson, a nice reference from the past.

Who'd'a Thunk?
Egg & Tomato Gratin! I almost didnt watch it...what I would have missed. :o/. Not only did it turn out to look interesting, but I even made it, and it was so quick, easy, and Wonderful.

Arborio Rice with Onions & Mushrooms: many interesting comments on both rice cooking methods, and mushrooms in general. Turns put much like a risotto, but much easier.

The Diver Scallops Stuffed with a sort of pesto made me realize there would be no end of possibilites for stuffing. Something I can do over & over without "repeating" the menu. These are served on a bed of the rice.

Caramelized Pineapple Spears have given me a multitude of ideas, as well. Not just for dessert!
